In my search for information on David Bratton I found a painting of him posted online. I was unsure of the artist and the details of why he chose to do the painting of David. Recently the artist reached out to me to give more information and the story behind the painting.
The painting of David Bratton was made around 2007 by artist, J.D. Shipman, towards the end of his undergraduate degree in painting and sculpting. The artist was doing a series of paintings utilizing photo references from the internet. The artist was primarily dealing with missing persons who had been missing for extended periods of time and executed criminals from the State of Texas. These works are generally related to Catholic devotional practices. In the painting of David Bratton, the artist incorporated the text of the prayer to St. Anthony (patron saint of lost people and objects) in the darkest layer of black. It's quite hard to read in the web image, but according to the artist it's quite visible in the original painting.
